    Kistefos is honoured to announce The Garden of Resuscitation, a major new site-responsive commission by Turner Prize-nominated artist Marguerite Humeau, to be inaugurated in the sculpture park in August 2026. The project marks the 60th addition to the Kistefos Sculpture Park.

🔔 Ding dong… Can you hear it? At the entrance to Kistefos’ new Visitor Centre, X by Cory Arcangel creates a soundscape that is never quite the same twice. Twelve bells hang within a cell phone tower, forming a carillon where the compositions are generated algorithmically through bespoke software. With no fixed musical score, the bells create an ever-changing and unpredictable soundtrack throughout the day. Come up to the attic of Smia! 👀🪑 Here, you’ll find a exhibition presenting the results of the design competition organised by Kistefos as part of the development of our new visitor centre. In autumn 2025, we invited design students and emerging designers to create a new chair and table for the museum café, inspired by Kistefos’ unique meeting of art, architecture, nature and industrial heritage. Nearly 100 proposals were submitted, and six finalists were selected to develop their ideas further. The exhibition presents the finalist proposals and offers a closer look at the process behind them. From initial ideas and drawings to models, material choices and final concepts. Head up to the attic of Smia on your next visit to Kistefos and discover the six finalists’ different responses to the brief.

When I’m in My Painting | Ragna Bley: In Conversation  Saturday 12 September 2026, 4pm

  Join artist Ragna Bley and Kistefos Senior Curator Kate Smith-Raabe for a conversation exploring the ideas, materials and processes behind Bley’s monumental paintings presented in When I’m in My Painting, and her wider relationship to the histories and materiality of painting.  From self-imposed rules, chance and experimentation to the use of snow and natural processes, the conversation will explore Bley’s intensely physical approach to painting and the ways in which she negotiates abstraction and figuration, control and intuition, image and material.  Taking the exhibition’s title from Jackson Pollock’s reflection on becoming fully immersed in the act of painting, the conversation will consider Bley’s practice within a wider history of painting while exploring the role of ambiguity, play and the unexpected in her work.  #RagnaBley #Kistefos #TheTwist #ContemporaryPainting

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Yayoi Kusama, one of the most influential and visionary artists of our time. For more than seven decades, Kusama created an extraordinary and unmistakable artistic universe. A pioneering figure of the international avant-garde, her work transcended painting, sculpture, installation and performance, and profoundly shaped the course of contemporary art. Her enduring explorations of infinity, repetition, love and the human experience have touched generations of audiences around the world. At Kistefos, we feel especially fortunate to have a lasting connection to her remarkable artistic legacy. In 2019, Kusama’s monumental Shine of Life became part of the Kistefos sculpture park. Rising from the water and surrounded by the natural landscape, the site-specific work brings Kusama’s extraordinary universe into dialogue with its surroundings. As the largest sculpture by Kusama in the Nordic countries, it holds a very special place in our collection. Over the years, Shine of Life has become one of the most beloved works among our guests — inspiring wonder and joy in visitors of all ages. We are profoundly grateful that Shine of Life is part of Kistefos, and that through it, we can continue to share Yayoi Kusama’s extraordinary artistic legacy with generations to come. “When I’m in My Painting” presents four contemporary voices that shape abstract painting today: Ragna Bley, Oscar Murillo, Ida Ekblad, and Albert Oehlen 🎨 🖌️ The title refers to the famous abstract painter Jackson Pollock’s reflection — “When I am in my painting …” — describing a state in which the boundaries between artist, action, and artwork dissolve. The exhibition explores painting as both process and presence, and as something shaped by gesture, material and time. It is based on the idea of the artist’s studio as both a physical and psychological space. The artists included in the exhibition are all represented in the collection of the Christen Sveaas Art Foundation. Opened today — Kistefos proudly presents Marguerite Humeau’s The Garden of Resuscitation ✨ Turner Prize-nominated French artist Marguerite Humeau has created one of her most ambitious works to date: a living, evolving environment that unfolds across the forest at Kistefos, bringing together sculpture, ecology, ritual, and seasonal transformation. Opening on 20 August 2026, The Garden of Resuscitation is the 60th work to enter the sculpture park. Conceived specifically for the site, the project transforms the surrounding forest itself into an artwork, incorporating plants and fungi, river currents, cultivated species, seasonal processes and annual rituals into the work itself. Situated in the southern forest zone along the Randselva river, the work is experienced as an immersive journey through the landscape, as visitors enter an unfolding environment through a garden cultivated as a recipe for an elixir, benches cast from paper pulp that create places to pause within the work, and a boardwalk that takes us humans on a contemplative journey through the forest. At the heart of the project stands a monumental sculpture of a resuscitated spruce tree recomposed with elements of its parasitic and symbiotic species. Glass vessels containing the elixir made from the cultivated plants surrounding the artwork appear among the trees. The elixir — the essence of the resuscitated tree — is central to the work’s life over time. Its recipe will continue to develop, using plants grown within the artwork, and the elixir will be prepared and shared during an annual communal gathering.
